BTCC star Rob Austin on Alfa Romeo’s return to the grid

Rob talks to Northgate about leading the way in an Alfa Romeo next season

Excitement is brewing in the British Touring Car Championship camp after it was announced that the Northgate-backed Handy Motorsport team and their star driver, Rob Austin, will be building a new Alfa Romeo Giulietta for the 2018 British Touring Car Championship.

As revealed at the recent Rockingham round, Rob will be swapping his current Toyota Avensis for the prestigious Giulietta model, bringing the legendary Italian brand’s decade-long absence from the grid to an end.

Rob explained his decision to switch to Alfa Romeo and the long process of bringing the brand back to BTCC.

“The conversation about Alfa Romeo started about two years ago, when I joined forces with Simon Belcher at Handy Motorsport,” said Rob. “Simon had a contact at Alfa and we worked hard behind the scenes to make the partnership a reality.”

The team are in the process of constructing the Giulietta, with the design still being finalised. The front-wheel drive car will be fitted with a BTCC TOCA engine for the 2018 season, with the possibility of a bespoke unit being developed for further seasons.

Rob described the Giulietta as the “perfect match” for BTCC regulations, adding: “It has a design that allows it to be light and aerodynamic with a lower centre of gravity. The Alfa will be a very competitive car and I expect it to be challenging straight away.”

He continued: “I’m really proud and excited to be the driver to bring such an iconic and stylish brand back to the BTCC. It’s an absolute dream come true and I can’t wait to start competing in the Giulietta next season.”

Rob and the Handy Motorsport team are sponsored by Northgate - we congratulate Rob on his good news and look forward to continuing to work with and support him in 2018.
