There are so many myths and false information surrounding vehicle hire that can make it feel like an unnecessary risk.
At Northgate, we want to take doubt out of the equation. We want to clear things up. That’s why we’ve pulled together direct answers to the biggest questions we receive daily from customers like you about our van hire solutions.


1. What will happen if my mileage is more than I agreed when I hired the vehicle?
Your hire agreement is based on a forecasted mileage that you would expect to do over the length of term. However, we do request regular mileage updates from you throughout your term so we can track and advise of any changes to your hire rate if required. The choice is yours to accept these changes and avoid any potential excess mileage charges at the end of your hire.
2. What happens if I need to return the vehicle earlier than I expected?
We have various hire solutions for different business needs.
Our Flexible Hire solution is suitable for uncertain or short term needs and has a minimum requirement of just 1 month after which you can return the vehicle with no termination charges. Our long-term hire solution is suitable for predictable business needs and has a minimum commitment of 12 months whilst offering more flexibility than if you were to purchase or lease the vehicle.


3. Will I get damage charges for what I see as fair wear and tear?
Our vehicles are closely checked at both point of collection and return, with documentation signed by you stating that you agree with the condition of the vehicle at each point. Any damage on the vehicle at the end of the hire is defined within the BVRLA’s Fair Wear and Tear guidance and is outlined within our Rentable standards.
4. If I hire, will I just get a plain white van without any of the optional extras I need?
Incorrect. All our 12months+ hire solutions offer a wide range of vehicle customisation options from simple workshop fitted options, such as towbars and custom livery, to specific manufacturer options and specialist requirements such as Chapter 8 compliance.


5. Will I have to pay for service and maintenance of the vehicle on top of the hire cost?
All Northgate hire solutions are part of a comprehensive package that includes servicing, maintenance, breakdown, and road tax as standard for the full length of hire. This is supplied via our network of 68 service centres nationwide, so we have full control of reducing your downtime and getting you back on the road.
